Open Water Swims

FIRST SWIM OF THE YEAR!!  6:00pm, Thursday, June 17!

The Lexington Hippos do an open water training session weekly in the Kentucky River, here, from Proud Mary’s Barbecue, 9079 Old Richmond Road.  Be prepared to swim in a wetsuit after heavy rainfall or unseasonably cold temperatures and to drink a mango margarita afterward!

While we will have two lifeguards on the water during these sessions, we ask that all participants be current members of USA Triathlon, USA Swimming, or USA Masters Swimming for liability purposes.  For the enjoyment of everyone, please hold off on participating if you cannot swim 100y under 2:15 AND 500y without stopping.

To ensure the safety of all participants, our open water swims are subject to cancellation immediately following heavy rain fall (run-off increases bacteria counts) or if flow rates in the Kentucky River exceed 7,000 ft^3/sec on the day of any event. This measurement is taken at the nearest downstream lock from our venue, Lock 9 near Valley View, KY, and can be viewed in real-time here. Lock 10’s data will be used when its repairs are completed.  Open Swim Cancellations will be announced by 4pm on the day of the event on this page and the Bluegrass Triathlon Club Social Page.
